How to Choose a PT100 RTD Temperature Sensor

Choosing a PT100 RTD temperature sensor starts with the process, not the product catalog. “PT100” refers to a platinum sensing element with a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C. Its resistance changes predictably as temperature changes, making it a common choice for industrial measurement. That does not make every PT100 sensor interchangeable. Accuracy, response time, and service life depend on the complete assembly and its installation.

Start by defining the operating temperature range and the accuracy your application actually needs. Check the sensor’s tolerance class, probe diameter, insertion length, and sheath material. A three-wire connection can reduce errors from lead resistance in many installations; four-wire wiring can provide higher measurement accuracy when the instrument supports it. For a long cable run, confirm compatibility with the transmitter or measurement input. Small details matter.

Also consider the medium, pressure, vibration, and available mounting space. A stainless-steel sheath may suit many processes, but material compatibility must be checked against the specific fluid and conditions. A thin probe may respond faster, yet could be less durable in a rough installation. There is no universal best choice. Real installations can behave differently from a specification sheet, especially when probe placement or thermal contact is poor. This guide explains how to compare these factors, ask suppliers for useful documentation, and select a PT100 RTD that fits the measurement task rather than simply matching a familiar label.

How to Choose a PT100 RTD Temperature Sensor

Understand How a PT100 RTD Measures Temperature

A PT100 does not measure temperature directly. It measures how platinum’s electrical resistance changes as temperature changes. Its nominal resistance is 100 ohms at 0°C, rising by about 0.385 ohms per degree near room temperature. A measurement circuit passes a small current through the element and reads the resulting voltage to calculate resistance. It then converts that value into temperature using a standard resistance curve.

That small change matters. The connecting wires also add resistance, which can distort the reading, especially with a two-wire setup. Three-wire circuits compensate for much of this effect; four-wire circuits can reduce it further. The sensor’s installation matters too. A probe touching a pipe loosely may respond slowly or reflect surrounding air more than the process temperature. I’ve found that a stable display does not always mean the probe has settled. Allow time for thermal contact, and check the reading against a suitable reference when accuracy is important. The measuring current can also warm the element slightly, so it should be kept appropriate for the sensor and instrument. No setup is perfect. A PT100’s useful precision depends on the whole measurement chain, not just the platinum element.

How to Choose a PT100 RTD Temperature Sensor — Understand How a PT100 RTD Measures Temperature

A PT100 measures temperature through the predictable change in electrical resistance of its platinum element. The chart shows representative IEC 60751 values: a nominal 100 Ω at 0°C, increasing to about 138.51 Ω at 100°C. Near 0°C, the sensitivity is approximately 0.385 Ω per °C. When choosing a sensor, check its temperature range, accuracy class, probe construction, and process connection.

Define the Required Temperature Range and Measurement Accuracy

Define the sensor’s full operating range, not just its normal setpoint. Include cold starts, brief overheating, cleaning cycles, and expected process excursions. A PT100 has a nominal resistance of 100 ohms at 0°C; IEC 60751 specifies a nominal temperature coefficient of 0.00385 ohms per ohm per degree Celsius. At the ice point, small resistance changes matter.

Then compare the required accuracy with the sensor’s tolerance at the actual temperature. IEC 60751:2022 gives Class A tolerance as ±(0.15 + 0.002|t|)°C and Class B as ±(0.3 + 0.005|t|)°C, where t is in degrees Celsius. At 100°C, that means ±0.35°C for Class A and ±0.8°C for Class B. Small errors matter. A Class A element may still be insufficient if the process needs accuracy tighter than ±0.35°C.

Treat those figures as sensor tolerances, not guaranteed system accuracy. Lead-wire resistance, transmitter performance, probe placement, and immersion depth can all affect the reading. For example, a probe mounted near a pipe wall may read differently from one immersed in the flowing center. Allow a practical margin, and check the complete measurement chain against the process requirement. The margin can be awkward to define; that is exactly where a calibration check helps.

Match the Probe Design to the Process and Installation

A PT100 RTD performs best when its probe suits both the process and the installation point. For a pipe, choose an insertion length that reaches the flowing medium, not just the cooler wall. In a tank, check that the sensing tip stays submerged as the level changes. Too little immersion can make readings reflect heat conducted along the sheath rather than the process itself.

Match sheath material and diameter to temperature, pressure, corrosion risk, and mechanical stress. A thinner sheath usually responds faster, but may be less robust in vibration or fast-moving flow. A thermowell can protect the probe and simplify replacement, though it may slow response. Check the available clearance, connection type, and wiring route before ordering. A three- or four-wire circuit can reduce lead-wire resistance effects, especially with longer cable runs. The best specification is not always the most elaborate one.

Tips: Measure the insertion depth on site. Confirm process limits and mounting orientation. Small details matter. If readings seem sluggish, review the well and immersion depth before assuming the sensor is faulty.

Choose the Wiring Method and Signal Interface

A PT100 can use two-, three-, or four-wire wiring. The right choice depends on cable length, required accuracy, and the instrument’s input. With two wires, lead resistance adds to the reading, which can matter over a long cable run. Three-wire wiring compensates for lead resistance when the leads are similar. Four-wire wiring measures resistance more directly and is useful when tighter accuracy is needed. Small details matter. Match the sensor’s wiring to the terminal diagram; wire colors are not always consistent.

Next, check how the receiving device handles the signal. A PLC or meter may accept a direct RTD input, while another system may need a transmitter that converts the PT100 reading to a standard output, such as 4–20 mA. Direct input can avoid an extra conversion stage, but only if the instrument supports the sensor type and wiring configuration. Check the input. Confirm the configured temperature range, excitation current, and fault behavior before installation.

For longer runs, consider cable resistance, electrical noise, and the route beside motors or power conductors. Use suitable twisted, shielded cable where the environment calls for it, and follow the instrument’s grounding instructions. In field work, I would verify the reading against a reference after wiring; a neat terminal layout does not prove the measurement is correct. One detail is easy to overlook: a transmitter’s output scaling must match the control system’s expected range. A mismatch can produce plausible, but wrong, temperatures.

How to Choose a PT100 RTD Temperature Sensor - Choose the Wiring Method and Signal Interface

Choice How It Works Lead-Resistance Effect Best Suited For Selection Checks
2-wire RTD connection The instrument measures the PT100 element through two leads. Lead resistance is included in the measured resistance and can create a temperature error. The effect increases with longer or thinner leads. Short cable runs or applications where the resulting measurement error is acceptable. Check cable length, conductor size, and the allowed measurement error.
3-wire RTD connection A third lead lets a compatible instrument compensate for lead resistance. Compensation generally assumes the lead resistances are similar; mismatched leads can leave residual error. Common industrial installations where a practical balance of wiring cost and measurement performance is needed. Confirm that the input supports 3-wire RTDs and use leads with matching material, gauge, and length where practical.
4-wire RTD connection One pair supplies the measuring current and a separate pair senses the voltage at the element. The separate sensing leads largely eliminate the effect of lead resistance on the measured resistance. Long cable runs or measurements requiring better control of lead-related error. Verify that the instrument supports 4-wire measurement and that the extra conductors are available.
Direct resistance input An RTD-capable input module or instrument measures the PT100 resistance and converts it to temperature. Depends on the selected 2-, 3-, or 4-wire connection and the input’s compensation method. Systems that can accept a sensor directly and need the temperature conversion performed at the controller or measurement device. Check PT100 compatibility, supported wiring, input range, excitation current, and configured sensor curve.
4–20 mA transmitter A transmitter measures the RTD and sends a current proportional to a configured temperature range. The transmitter’s RTD input wiring determines lead compensation; the current output is generally suitable for transmitting a signal over longer cable runs. Industrial control systems using current-loop inputs or installations where a conditioned signal is preferred. Match the transmitter’s RTD input and wiring to the sensor, and configure the temperature range, loop supply, and receiver input.
0–10 V transmitter output A transmitter converts the measured temperature into a voltage across a configured range. RTD lead compensation is handled at the transmitter input; the voltage signal can be more affected by electrical noise and voltage drop than a current-loop signal. Control systems with compatible voltage inputs and relatively short or electrically quiet signal wiring. Check the receiver’s input range, grounding arrangement, cable environment, and transmitter output range.
Digital transmitter or interface A compatible device converts the RTD measurement and communicates temperature digitally over its supported protocol. Lead compensation depends on the device’s RTD input wiring; the digital link has its own cable, distance, and network requirements. Systems that need digital configuration, diagnostics, or integration with a supported communication network. Confirm protocol compatibility, power and wiring requirements, network limits, and available diagnostics.
Practical note: A standard PT100 has a nominal resistance of 100 Ω at 0 °C. For a common platinum curve with α = 0.00385, resistance changes by approximately 0.385 Ω per °C near 0 °C. The complete measurement performance depends on the sensor tolerance, wiring, transmitter or input device, installation, and operating conditions.

Check Calibration, Materials, and Environmental Compatibility

Choosing a PT100 RTD starts with the calibration record, not the product label. IEC 60751:2022 specifies Class A tolerance as ±(0.15 + 0.002|t|)°C, where t is temperature in °C. At 100°C, that allows ±0.35°C. Class B allows ±0.8°C at the same temperature. Check whether the stated class covers your full operating range. Also compare calibration points with actual process temperatures; a certificate covering only room temperature may not reveal drift near a hot pipe. Calibration is not the whole measurement uncertainty.

Materials matter. A stainless-steel sheath may suit a clean water line, yet chlorides can cause pitting over time. For corrosive fluids, confirm compatibility with the exact chemistry, concentration, and temperature—not merely the material name. Think about the installation, too. A long probe in a narrow thermowell can respond slowly. It happens.

Check environmental limits against the sensor’s datasheet and the site conditions. Moisture at a cable entry, vibration near a pump, or repeated thermal cycling can undermine a sound calibration. IEC 60529 defines IP enclosure-protection ratings, but an IP rating alone does not establish chemical resistance or temperature suitability. Ask for traceable calibration records and stated uncertainty. One detail I sometimes overlook is cable and connector compatibility; it can quietly add error. Verify the complete assembly, including leads, sheath, and thermowell, under real operating conditions.
